A palimpsest refers to the practice of reusing parchment or vellum by scraping or washing off existing text. This was never a perfect process so a remnant was always left that was overwritten, but still visible if looked at in the right way. This term can also refer to landscape around us, the history of the people of the UK is there in the landscape around us if we know how to look.
Birmingham’s proposed new “place for learning” has been identified by the Urban Design Group as one of four shortlisted projects in their national awards, to be decided by public vote.
The final piece of the puzzle of my postgraduate journey at UCL will be undertaking a major research project, where I’m looking to combine various interests of mine to tackle an urban problem, and devise an urban design solution. Over the past year or so I have been jotting down ideas to explore, recently I noticed a pattern emerging.
After the over indulgence of the festive period, the New Year is characteristically a time for turning over a new leaf. For many this includes a resolution to get fit, lose weight and be healthier. And with good reason: the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation has found that 1 in 4 British people are classified as obese: the highest levels in Western Europe.
