North Devon Council
Node were commissioned by North Devon Council to prepare a landscape design masterplan for Ilfracombe seafront. This was carried out with a holistic approach towards making the Seafront better connected, more enjoyable, promote health and well-being and provide a sense of place and purpose linked with Ilfracombe’s historic legacy.
Due to the geography of the seafront and the infrastructure built up over many decades, the Environment Agency were a key design partner with Node. Sea and flood defence were a critical design constraint and we worked closely with environmental engineers to ensure that the landscape design proposals incorporated all the necessary engineering requirements. As our collaboration was close, and initiated at the outset, the resulting designs were not compromised and the resulting proposals turned EA necessities into advantages for the public realm experience.
The result was a seafront masterplan that considered functionality alongside aesthetics and enjoyment, creating a plan that can be implemented in phases whilst still being consistent and coherent in its design narrative.
