A recent trip to Iceland reminded me of the power of landscape and the impact it can have on our spirit and emotions. Few places in the world have such a diverse landscape within such a compact area. From the vast lava fields surrounding the airport, the fjords in the north and east, the volcanoes in the south, the glaciers in the north west and central area, to the fault lines and hot springs, mud pools and geysers in the south west’s Golden Circle; all surrounded by the power of the Atlantic Ocean and whales and puffin colonies.
With the recent discussions, research and detailing works in the office, I understand the significance of details and I have started to notice them more carefully within any design that I come across. Detailing is a key stage in any architecture or landscape architecture project. A detail addresses the functionality, constructability and the aesthetics of a design. Detailing for functionality and constructability is done with every project, but detailing for aesthetics is what makes a designed landscape stand out.
I am proud that Brasilia, my hometown in Brazil, is applying the concept I have been researching for my Masters thesis: temporary uses. Throughout the month of July, two different appropriations of spaces were undertaken in the city.
