Approach
Commissioned at reserved matters stage, Node developed a collaborative approach to achieving quality design for a new urban extension comprising 3,000 new dwellings, a large mixed-use local centre and managed ecological reserve. Working closely with the detailed layout designers for Barratt Homes, Taylor Wimpey and David Wilson Homes, Node pioneered a design-led approach which sought to achieve a cohesive and characterful design through maximising the influence of the streetscape, landscape and civic spaces to establish a design strategy which resonated a strong sense of place within its wider setting of a number of Warwickshire villages.
Impact
Developed over a series internal of design workshops, Node established a six point framework to achieving sense of place through the design of the street patterns, building lines, parking arrangements, landscaping and street planting, character spaces and architectural design. Following the finalisation of the reserved matters layout, we took the scheme successfully through the Design Review process at Stratford-on-Avon District Council, including an in-depth workshop with Warwickshire’s highways authority and adoptions team to establish a series of solutions which create streetscape environments with a strong sense of local character whilst also maintaining the standards required by the county council.
The final design solution was articulated to work for all in respect of the commercial viability required by our clients, the highway standards set by the Warwickshire County Council and the design quality set out Stratford-on-Avon council’s supplementary guidance, overall creating a new high quality sustainable community with injections of character which will see the scheme possess a strong synergy with its wider village setting.
